Master of Science in Tourism Development

Dr Michelle McLeod is a beneficiary of a scholarship from the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) in 2004. The scholarship allowed her to pursue a Master of Science in Tourism Development at the University of Surrey. After completing her undergraduate studies at The University of the West Indies (UWI) in 1991, Dr McLeod aspired to continue her studies but could not obtain the funding to do so. After applying for many opportunities to further her studies and a second application for a CTO scholarship, she finally obtained the funding to further her studies from the CTO in 2004. A CTO scholarship assisted her in fulfilling her dreams. 

Dr McLeod is a Senior Lecturer at The University of the West Indies, Mona Campus, Jamaica. Her tourism industry experience spans over 30 years and she is a graduate of The UWI, University of Surrey and Bournemouth University where she obtained a doctorate with no corrections after her Viva. Dr McLeod has achieved several awards including the Principal’s Award for the Best Publication (Book) for ‘Island Tourism Sustainability and Resiliency’ in 2023 and Research Project with Greatest Economic Impact for the Faculty of Social Sciences for the project entitled “Open Data and Interactive Community Mapping: Empowering Local Community Tourism” in 2018, the Principal’s Award for Research Project Attracting the Most Research Funds in the Faculty of Social Sciences for the project entitled “Harnessing Open Data to Achieve Development Results in Latin America and the Caribbean” in 2016, Best Researcher in the Mona School of Business and Management in 2016 and 2023, the Institute of Travel and Tourism, PhD Research Student of the Year in 2010, and the UKAIS (United Kingdom Academy of Information Systems) PhD Consortium, Winner of PhD Consortium Best Presentation Prize in April 2008. 

Dr Michelle McLeod forthcoming book entitled ‘Island Tourism Policy and Sustainable Development is the first of its kind about island tourism policy, governance and sustainability. Dr McLeod’s other two co-edited books are entitled “Knowledge Networks and Tourism” and “Tourism Management in Warm-water Island Destinations”. Her present research interests are in the subject areas of tourism, knowledge networks, open data ecosystems, policy networks, destination networks and service productivity.
